The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery will present the work of 22 contemporary photographers who are exploring the medium and technologies of photography in a diversity of ways in the exhibition “In Process: Contemporary Photographers Rethinking Their Medium From the Collection of Mark D. Nevins ‘86”, on view from March 10 through April 10, 2022. There will be opening events held on March 15 beginning with a conversation between alumnus Mark D. Nevins ’86 and independent curator Randy Rosen in Rehm Library beginning at 5:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the Cantor Gallery at 6 p.m.

Nevins, who was a Fenwick Scholar while a student at Holy Cross, graduated in 1986 as an English major, and went on to earn a Ph.D. in English literature from Harvard University. He spent a decade teaching at Harvard, then began a corporate career in global leadership roles which led to his work as a consultant and advisor to top executives, teams and organizations as president of Nevins Consulting, Inc.

As a child, Nevins became immersed in the world of comic books, which later became a passion for collecting comic books and graphic novels. In 2018, he made an initial gift of over 1,000 volumes from his collection to the Dinand Library at Holy Cross, which established the Mark D. Nevins Collection for the Study of Comic and Graphic Novels, a collection he continues to make contributions to.

His interest in literature and visual art found further expression in a collection of processed-based photographs. Working with Randy Rosen, curator and principal of Randy Rosen Associates, they have focused acquisitions on works that reconsider the role of light, materiality, color, and subject, to beautiful and often enigmatic results. The collection includes works by Abelardo Morell, Marco Breuer, Jessica Eaton, Alison Rossiter, Hiroshi Sugimoto, among others.

In addition to the opening events, there will be artist talks by Abelardo Morell and Bryan Graf; an in-person gallery tour by Matthew Gamber, professor of photography at Holy Cross; and a virtual panel discussion with Prof. Gamber, Rosen, and artists Ellen Carey and Penelope Umbrico.
