The Role of the Resident Assistant or Peer Educator

Resident Assistants and Peer Educators assist our staff primarily through crisis identification. We ask you to consult with a member of our staff and/or make a referral to the Center whenever it comes to your attention that a student you know is  experiencing personal difficulties. We do not expect that you will seek out and identify every person in your area who is distressed.

However, we do expect you to respond appropriately to those students who come to your attention through daily interactions.  RAs and PEs are not responsible for crisis intervention. You are never to try to handle a student in distress by yourself, nor are you expected to take responsibility for his/her safety. Once you have brought such a student to the attention of a member of the professional staff you have fulfilled your obligation.
