Faculty Learning Communities

Faculty Learning Communities are faculty-formed and faculty-driven groups that provide opportunities for faculty development in their scholarship and/or teaching, as well as providing multual support among those in the group. We are collecting here some examples of currently active Faculty Learning Communities on campus.

Writing Across the Curriculum Collaborative

The Writing Across the Curriculum Collaborative (WACC) is a learning community of those interested in the teaching of writing in their classroom, department, discipline, and across the curriculum. We meet to discuss issues and ideas from our own experiences in order to find points of commonality, disjuncture, and support. We read a bit, talk a lot, and when able, engage in projects that will benefit the campus conversation about and practice of teaching writing. WACC meets once a month and we ask that members meet with the group at least twice a semester. Interested? Please contact Laurie A Britt-Smith, Director Center for Writing

Early Work

Early Work is a research conversation group designed to support untenured faculty pursuing works-in-progress in any discipline. Sessions proceed as active conversations, with each featured participant describing current interests, questions, and challenges. No formal reading or pre-circulation of papers is required. By limiting participation to tenure track and full- and part-time visiting faculty, Early Work offers a constructive, low-stakes environment in which ideas can develop. In addition to the conversation series, Early Work supports specific events on research, writing, and time management that are especially relevant to the earlier stages of an academic career. Regular meetings generally occur on Monday afternoons in the Dinand Faculty Lounge.
