Faculty Scholarship & Professional Development
The Teacher-Scholar Model
The College is dedicated to supporting and facilitating faculty research opportunities:
- Every pre-tenure faculty member is offered a research leave to pursue a funded period of research.
- Every tenured faculty member earns a sabbatical leave every seven years.
- Faculty receive support to pursue external funding for their research, including from federal agencies, private foundations, corporations, professional organizations, and other sources.
- Many faculty members recruit students to contribute to their research programs, which provides research assistance for the faculty, invaluable learning opportunities for the students, and the opportunity to forge meaningful faculty-student professional relationships beyond the classroom.
Available Resources
All tenure-line faculty receive an annual research and professional development account that supports direct research expenses, research travel, publication costs, professional memberships, and other professional development activities. Supplemental funding is available upon application.
The Provost's Office provides faculty with support for scholarly activity and professional development activities upon application.
The Committee on Faculty Scholarship is an elected faculty group that conducts peer reviews of internal applications for research grants, faculty fellowships, and other research awards.
The Provost’s Office also offers additional internal funding opportunities to support faculty scholarship and professional development. Examples of these opportunities include Rapid Response, Visiting Speaker Series and Distinguished Visiting Practitioner Grants.
