Rev. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J.  On January 9, 2012, Rev. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J., became the 32nd president of the College of the Holy Cross.
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1949, Fr. Boroughs was raised in Seattle.   He earned his B.A. from Gonzaga University, in Spokane, Washington in 1973 and received a Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology (Chicago) in 1978.  He later went on to receive a Licentiate of Sacred Theology from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkley, CA in 1987 and a Ph. D. in Christian Spirituality from the Graduate Theological Union (Berkley, CA) in 1989.  His doctoral dissertation was on John Woolman (1720-1772), an itinerate Quaker preacher in Colonial America. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1969, was ordained a priest in 1978, and made his final vows in 1986. 
Before assuming his role as the President of Holy Cross, Rev. Boroughs served as Georgetown University’s first-ever vice president for mission and ministry from 2003-2011. He was responsible for developing programs for faculty, staff, students and alumni which advanced Catholic and Jesuit identity. He also directed a ministry on campus and at Georgetown University Hospital. Prior to his position at Georgetown, Fr. Boroughs served the rector of the Jesuit Community at Seattle University where he was also a faculty member in the School of Theology and Ministry (1989-91); as the assistant novitiate director for the Oregon province of Jesuits (1980-82); and as a parish priest at St. Leo Church in Tacoma, Washington (1978-80.)  A former member of the Board of Trustees at the University of San Francisco, he also served as a member of the Holy Cross Board of Trustees (2008-2011) 
Rev. Boroughs enjoys travel, hiking and outdoor recreation.  He also dedicates himself to many charitable causes, including fundraising for St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School in Nairobi, a school dedicated to aiding young people from the slum of Kibera whose parents have died of AIDS.
