Biography
Professor Anthony James Williams is an abolitionist sociologist. Their work examines race and the carceral continuum across prisons and public spaces. Dr. Williams is currently preparing a journal article and a book manuscript based on their dissertation, Us Versus Them: How California State Prisons Justify Solitary Confinement. This details the dangerous consequences of the discretionary power that California state prison staff wield over incarcerated people through the use and threat of solitary confinement. Their book reviews have been published in Symbolic Interaction and Contexts. Their public commentary has been featured and published in The Hill, Wired, Vox, the LA Times, CNN, Inside HigherEd, Electric Lit, California Magazine, and Boom: A Journal of California. Their scholarship has earned support from the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship, the Bouchet Graduate Honors Society, Harvard University's Radcliffe Institute, the Social Science Research Council, the Scholar Strategy Network, and the Urban Teachers Network. They started their academic journey at their local community college prior to receiving their B.A. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley as well as their M.A., M.Phil, and Ph.D in Sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles.
