Community-Based Learning 

Many courses offered through the ASL and Deaf Studies program include a Community-Based Learning (CBL) component, fusing students’ learning experience together with community engagement. The program collaborates with more than 15 partners in the Deaf community on a range of CBL projects, such as performing research for nonprofit organizations, organizing community events with Deaf leaders, and offering educational activities to Deaf high school students. Students improve their ASL skills, while also networking and building working relationships with Deaf professionals across a wide range of professions in the community. 

 

Interdisciplinary Studies

Pursuing a Deaf Studies major or minor through the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies gives students the opportunity to integrate their Deaf studies with two other disciplines within the College. Past approved student designed multidisciplinary majors have included, “Social Issues in Deaf Education;” “Genetics and the Deaf Community;" and “Development of Literacy Skills for Deaf Children.” Students may also design a double major or minor, which have included:

 

  • Double majors: Spanish plus Deaf Studies and Education; Art History plus Deaf Studies and Education; Sociology plus Language and Culture in the Deaf Community
  • Minors: Deaf Studies and the Arts; Deaf Studies and Education; Deaf Studies, Connecting Deaf

Semester Away Program

Students who are interested in gaining a more complete immersion experience in the “Deaf World” can link their learning and living by attending Gallaudet University, the world’s only Deaf university, located in Washington, D.C. Students attend one semester at Gallaudet as a visiting student through the Semester Away program at Holy Cross. 

 

Alumni Success

ASL and Deaf Studies graduates go on to succeed in a variety of careers and fields, such as education, human services and government. Some graduates decide to advance their study of ASL and Deaf Studies by applying for graduate programs, including Deaf Education at Boston University or the Interpreter Training Program at Northeastern University.
