Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures
Study Abroad and Semester Away
Foreign language proficiency and cultural knowledge are a crucial component of your 21st-century skill set. Study abroad/semester away is your fast-track to language proficiency, and programs are available for all languages taught at the College across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the United States.
Foreign Language Assistants Program
Foreign language assistants (FLAs) conduct language “practica,” or small group practice sessions, which are an integral part of language courses. Oral practice, real-life simulations and interaction with native speakers offer students a way to increase their fluency while gaining insight into the contemporary world of their FLA’s native countries and communities.
Explore your interests and expand the scope of your studies by combining World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures majors and minors with other disciplines and interdisciplinary programs, including:
- Africana Studies
- Asian Studies
- Environmental Studies
- International Studies
- Medieval and Renaissance Studies
- Middle Eastern Studies
- Russian and Eastern European Studies
You can also incorporate language study in a self-designed major through the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies.
Beyond the Classroom
Vibrant cultural programming introduces students to a range of cultural traditions, intellectual perspectives and social practices. Lecture and debates, trips to museums and restaurants, and celebrations of national holidays are only some examples of the opportunities each program offers its students.
