Yu-Jung Lin

Biography
I am a linguist and language educator whose work asks how speakers navigate sound systems and how communities navigate language across the life course. My quantitative research uses experimental phonetics and psycholinguistics to study Mandarin tone, rhythm, and the influence of orthography on sound processing, while my qualitative work follows Chinese immigrant elders learning English, tracing how language, aging, and belonging intersect in daily life. At Holy Cross, I teach Chinese language courses, sociolinguistics for immigrant communities in the U.S., sociolinguistics in Asia, Chinese linguistics, Asian migration to the U.S, Chinese culture, and a seminar on second language teaching and learning. I also serve as the Director of the International Language Assistants (ILA) Program.
