Biography

“Nathan D. Wood-House is the Visiting Assistant Professor of Race and Religion. He holds a Ph.D. from Boston College in Systematic Theology and Theological Ethics and an M. Div. From Duke University. He received his B.A. in Philosophy and Religion from Samford University. Before joining the religious studies department at Holy Cross, Nathan was a Teaching Fellow at Boston College.

Dr. Wood-House’s areas of expertise lie in Black liberation theology and political theology, particularly, the thought of James H. Cone and Johann Baptist Metz, respectively. Dr. Wood-House is the author of “The Echoes of Conjure in African American Christianity as Enfleshed Memory,” (Black Theology 19, no. 2) and has also published on Luther’s ethics and the New Finnish School (Horizons 48, no.1). More recently, he wrote an article for Political Theology on Black Reason. Dr. Wood-House teaches and researches critical race and Blackness studies, the theological imagination, and their intersection with contemporary culture. He is currently researching the interweaving of Christian anthropologies and myths of creation with discourses of race (Blackness and whiteness), and their co-production of fantastic theological socio-cultural imaginaries expressed and contested variously in literature, television, and film.

Dr. Wood-House also works with his church to promote anti-racism and social equality both within the Christian tradition and in the community. In this vein, he has taught numerous book studies on the intrication of Christianity with white supremacy, led adult educational forums, and is currently the Co-Chair for Racial Justice for his congregation.”
