Direct Admission is available for MA degree programs at all campuses except for the Master of International Public Policy (MIPP), Master of Arts in Global Policy (MAGP), and Master of Arts in Sustainable Energy (MASE online). Scholarship opportunities are available, dependent on the degree or program the student is admitted to. Applicants are expected to meet the application and admissions requirements of the selected SAIS MA program.

How it Works

  1. Prospective students will apply to the direct admission program at SAIS during their first semester of their final year of full-time study at Holy Cross by providing the application materials outlined on the Direct Admission page of the SAIS website.
  2. Applicants must be enrolled at Holy Cross as full-time students in good academic standing.
  3. The Direct Admission option is open to all students in related undergraduate degree programs who meet the admissions criteria.
  4. Undergraduate students, with a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher are eligible for direct admission to a participating SAIS master's degree, certificate or diploma program. Applicants must meet the specific requirements and prerequisites of the desired degree, certificate or diploma in order to be eligible.
  5. Eligible applicants must have:
    1. minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.6 at the time of application or upon completion of the Holy Cross degree; and
    2. passing grade or minimum grade(s) in the required courses for their selected degree program, certificate, or diploma as outlined on the SAIS website for Direct Admission.
  6. A reduced application is offered and an interview with a SAIS Admissions Officer would be strongly recommended to evaluate the candidate and provide information on SAIS offerings.
  7. Applications are reviewed by SAIS to determine that the student meets all Direct Admission criteria for the selected program. If students meet the criteria, they will be admitted.
  8. SAIS will communicate its decisions to the applicant via the Slate application system after the review has been completed. Admitted applicants must submit the candidate reply form to accept their offer of admission.
  9. SAIS offers of admission will be conditional upon the admitted student successfully completing their final year of undergraduate study at Holy Cross and any SAIS prerequisites prior to matriculation.
  10. SAIS can offer an enrollment deferral of up to one academic year for students admitted via the Direct Admission pathway. Deferrals are reviewed case-by-case and are typically granted for unique employment opportunities, special fellowship programs, approved dual-degree plans or family/medical emergencies. Institutional scholarship aid awarded by SAIS can be carried forward for up to one year.

Tuition

  1. Students admitted to an eligible degree program (MAIR, MAIA, MIEF, MASCI, MAGR, MAGR online or the SAIS Europe Diploma) will receive a minimum tuition scholarship of 35% up to full tuition.
  2. Students admitted to the Hopkins-Nanjing Certificate or MAIS degree program will receive a 35% tuition scholarship.
  3. Non-Degree Certificate students will receive 35% off the degree student tuition rate per course.
  4. MEPP students are not eligible for scholarship through the Direct Admission program.
  5. Students will be responsible for paying for books, insurance, additional school fees and room and board.

Financial Aid

  1. Students may apply for additional financial aid from SAIS when submitting the application. Campus-specific financial aid forms and a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may need to be completed.
  2. SAIS will comply with applicable federal Title IV law and regulations, state, accreditation, and institutional requirements related to financial aid processing for students who apply to the Program.

The SAIS Summer Academy Program is a month-long program geared toward rising sophomores, upperclassmen and recent college graduates focusing on selected topics in international relations. Summer Academies are offered in SAIS Washington and SAIS Europe.

Summer Academy Student Eligibility

  1. Rising sophomores, upperclassmen and recent college graduates who have completed their undergraduate degree within the past two years.
  2. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be eligible.

Summer Academy Admission

  1. Eligible students will apply to the SAIS Summer Academy by the annually stated deadlines.
  2. Application requirements are located on the SAIS Summer Academy webpage.
  3. It is preferred that international students have a minimum TOEFL score of 100, an IELTS composite score of 7 or higher, or a Cambridge C1 score of 185 or higher or C2 Proficiency upon entry to Holy Cross. Alternatively, students must maintain Holy Cross minimum English language requirements for international students. Should international students not meet the minimum score, SAIS has discretion to offer an alternative test or assessment to determine if the student is eligible for the program.
  4. Applications are submitted through the Slate application system and reviewed by SAIS to determine that the student meets all Summer Academy criteria. If students meet the criteria, they will be admitted.
  5. SAIS will communicate its decisions to the applicant via the Slate application system after the review has been completed. Admitted applicants must submit the candidate reply form to accept their offer of admission.

Summer Academy Tuition and Scholarships

  1. Tuition, Housing and Program Fees are posted annually on the SAIS Summer Academy website.
  2. SAIS aims to provide scholarships to cover full or partial tuition, housing and program fees for a limited number of qualified Holy Cross students.
  3. Additional scholarship opportunities may be offered on the SAIS Summer Academy website for both the Summer Academy in Washington, D.C., and in Bologna, Italy.

Summer Academy Course Completion and Transfer Grades

  1. Courses will be graded according to the grading policies at SAIS as noted in the SAIS Student and Academic Handbook, as well as the individual course syllabus.
  2. Courses at SAIS shall be taken for credit and students will receive a grade. They may not be taken on an Audit or on a Pass/Fail basis.
  3. Once the Summer Academy concludes and grades have been submitted, the student can request that the official transcript be sent to the registrar at Holy Cross. Holy Cross will then review the transcript and apply the completed courses to the undergraduate transcript. These courses may count toward Holy Cross degree completion.
  4. Holy Cross students who complete credits through the Summer Academy at SAIS and are later accepted to a SAIS degree program, may apply the credits earned toward the SAIS MAIR, MAIA, MIPP, PhD, or DIA degrees, the SAIS Europe Diploma, or the SAIS Non-Degree Certificate. Students may only transfer up to eight Summer Academy credits toward the SAIS MAIR, MAIA, MIPP, PhD, DIA, or SAIS Europe Diploma and up to four credits toward the SAIS Non-Degree Certificate. Holy Cross students will receive course credit to an eligible degree once they have matriculated and complete the proper approval forms.
  5. SAIS non-degree credits may only be applied to a degree program within 10 years of completion.
