Biography
Milad Azarm is a theatre historian, dramaturg and performance practitioner specializing in theatre history, dramatic literature, postdramatic theatre and Middle Eastern theatre and film. He is Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre History and Dramatic Literature at the College of the Holy Cross, where he teaches courses in modern drama, theatre history, gender and performance and Middle Eastern theatre and film.
His scholarship explores contemporary American theatre, dramaturgy, performance theory and Iranian performance traditions. His work has appeared in journals including TDR: The Drama Review, New Theatre Quarterly, Theatre Topics and Iranian Studies. He has presented his research at conferences and symposia including the Association for Theatre in Higher Education and UC San Diego’s Ta’ziyeh: Rethinking a Devotional Tradition. His Persian translation of Paul Rae’s Theatre and Human Rights was published in 2022.
Before joining Holy Cross, Azarm taught theatre history, directing, acting, dramaturgy and performance studies in the United States and Iran. In 2025, he received Ohio University’s Seigfred Outstanding Teacher Award for excellence in teaching. He has also worked as a director, dramaturg, actor and filmmaker on theatrical and cinematic projects in Iran and the United States. His scholarly and creative work connects global performance traditions with contemporary critical and aesthetic questions.
