Six Character in Search of an Author
Oct. 30-31 and Nov. 1, 6-8 at 7:30 p.m.
Nov. 2 and 9 at 2 p.m.
By Luigi Pirandello
Translated by Edward Storer
Directed by Steve Vineberg
Boroughs Theatre
A theatre company preparing their latest production is disrupted by the appearance of six figures who claim to be characters abandoned by their author. They beg the director and actors to dramatize their story, with results that are comic, heartbreaking, haunting and ultimately mysterious. Luigi Pirandello’s 1921 play challenges the assumptions of realism: can we really replicate human relationships, with all their contradictions and complexity, on the stage? Six Characters in Search of an Author is a modern classic that continues to exert a profound influence on theatre and film more than a century after it was first produced.

Book by James Lapine
Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Directed by Meaghan Deiter
Luth Concert Hall
Perhaps the stories we learned as children aren’t as simple as they once seemed. Into the Woods, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s witty and daring reimagining of classic fairy tales, leaves behind the binary world of good versus evil and right versus wrong to explore what really happens after “happily ever after.” Little Red Riding Hood and Jack the Giant Killer confront the consequences of their choices, and their decisions echo throughout their community, while Cinderella and Rapunzel discover that getting what you want doesn’t always lead to happiness. Sondheim and Lapine welcome us into an unconventional kind of fairy tale that challenges conventional thinking and the tales we thought we knew. After all, witches can be right and giants can be good. It's up to us to decide.
