Biography

Hello! My name is María and I’m excited to be one of your FLAs for the 2025/2026 academic year!

I’m from Guatemala but have been living in Galicia, Spain, since 2019. I moved here to pursue a degree in Literature and Language at the Universidade da Coruña, where I’m now completing my MA in Advanced English Studies with a focus on Literature and Culture. I’ve participated in a couple of international educational experiences, which have given me the chance to explore beautiful places like Scotland and Ireland, but this will be my first time in the U.S. My academic journey has led me to meet people from all over the world and learn about different cultures and languages while sharing my own; I’m thrilled for the opportunity to do that with you as well!

Like many humanities students, I spend most of my free time reading fiction. Recently, I’ve been getting into sci-fi, but I also love reading the classics (I pride myself on having read all six novels by Jane Austen and some of her minor works as well). Honestly, I enjoy storytelling in all forms—from literature, theatre, and films (one of my goals for 2025 is to watch more movies, so let me know if you have any recommendations!) to animation, and video games. Other hobbies of mine include cooking, playing (but losing at) chess, watching three-hour-long video essays on YouTube, and listening to the same five albums on repeat.

I can’t wait to meet you. ¡Nos vemos pronto!
