Foster Waterman Stearns

Foster Waterman StearnsPortrait of Foster Waterman Stearns (1881-1956), who served as the college librarian at Holy Cross from 1925 to 1930.  Stearns graduated from Amherst College in 1903, Harvard University in 1906, and Boston College in 1915.  Prior to working at Holy Cross, Stearns served as the librarian at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston from 1913-1917 and State Librarian of Massachusetts in 1917.  He served in the US Military during World War I as a first lieutenant from 1917-1919.  Stearns began his political career in 1937 when he served as a State Representative for New Hampshire.  He was elected to Congress and served from 1939-1945.
