Dean of the Class of 2022
Welcome to Holy Cross, Members of the Class of 2022!
I am the Class Dean of the Class of 2022. I have been a professor in the Psychology Department at Holy Cross since 1987 and I served as the Class Dean for the Class of 2017.
What is a class dean? Each incoming class is assigned a member of the teaching faculty to serve as the class dean for those students throughout their time at Holy Cross, from acceptance to graduation. The class deans monitor all aspects of students’ academic plans and progress and, over the course of four years, we have the opportunity to get to know students personally and to assist them in making their time here meaningful and rewarding. The class deans also oversee the academic advising program at Holy Cross.
As your class dean, it is my pleasure to invite you and your parents to participate in the Summer Gateways Orientation Program. The overall goal of Gateways is to help students have a positive transition to college. At Gateways, you will meet many members of the Holy Cross community and learn about the exciting variety of programs and opportunities that will be available to you over the next four years. To help you prepare for Gateways and for the fall semester, you will receive a First-Year Student Guide, which will be mailed to you well in advance of Gateways and will include information regarding important deadlines and instructions on accessing the accompanying First Year Student Guide website.
A major component of your transition to college is to begin to develop your academic plan. The First-Year Student Guide website includes information about the courses available for first-year students, including Montserrat (first-year experience) seminars. During Gateways, you will have the opportunity to meet with class deans and explore what it means to be a Holy Cross student. You will also have a one-on-one meeting with a faculty member to discuss which courses would be good choices for you in your first year at the College. I encourage you to review the Guide and the website so that you will be prepared for that meeting. After Gateways, you will submit your Montserrat and other course preferences online. In July, we will enroll you in a Montserrat seminar and one other course (from the preferences you submitted). In August, you can use the information from your Gateways advising session to complete your online enrollment in your two remaining fall courses.
In August, I will assign you an academic advisor. You will meet with your advisor prior to the start of classes in the fall and several other times throughout the academic year. At the first meeting, you can discuss any questions or concerns you have about the start of the semester and you will then have time to make some final adjustments to your fall schedule of classes.
We hope that this orientation program will answer many of your questions and ease your transition to life at Holy Cross. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you might have. You may reach me by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or you call my office at 508-793-2532. I will use email to keep in touch and share information, so please activate your Holy Cross email account and check it frequently.
I hope your time at Holy Cross is challenging, fun, interesting, and rewarding. I look forward to meeting you soon and working with you as the Dean of the Class of 2022.
