Thursday, June 7 – Saturday, June 16, 2018
Holy Cross Alumni Travel has partnered with the Chaplain’s Office to offer our first immersion service trip for alumni. Based on the student trip in January 2017, our group will be working with the Be Like Brit Foundation in Haiti to assist families affected by the devastating earthquake of 2010. The goal of Holy Cross immersion trips is to be in solidarity with the people of each country to gain a sense of their values and their faith, to experience gracious hospitality, and to witness first-hand the poverty that so many in our world live with each day.
This seven-day service experience will be preceded by two days at the Thomas P. Joyce ‘59 Contemplative Center in West Boylston, MA. This time will allow participants to meet and bond together in faith.
Our group has a capacity of 12 participants and will be accompanied by Rev. James Hayes, S.J. ’72 of the Holy Cross Chaplains Office and Rosie Henry ’14, a past tour participant and Be Like Brit group leader.
The Haiti Experience
Alumni will stay in the Brit’s Home – formally named the Be Like Brit Orphanage — in the town of Grand Goâve, approximately 38 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince. The group will spend mornings building a home for a family in need, and will spend afternoons running activities with the children at Brit’s Home, as well as participating in cultural immersion experiences. The group will also take in the natural beauty of the country with visits to surrounding towns.
Thursday, June 7: Arrive at Holy Cross campus by 5:00 p.m. for group transport to the Thomas P. Joyce ’59 Contemplative Center. Dinner and overnight. (Participants may leave their cars on campus.)
Friday, June 8: The day will include a visit to Be Like Brit Operations Center in Worcester, MA for orientation and instruction. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight at JCC.
Saturday, June 9: Group transfer on Saturday morning from Center to Logan International Airport for flight from Boston to Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
Saturday, June 16: Depart Port-au-Prince for flight to Boston. Late afternoon/evening arrival expected. Group transfer from Logan to Holy Cross campus.
