Course Offering by the Worcester Consortium:
CT 917: Teaching with Writing

Course attended by: Matthew Koss

"I took CT 917: Teaching with Writing to prepare to teach in Montserrat, and I was very glad I did. The course was one 3-hour session a week for six weeks, and we covered: some broad philosophical ideas of teaching writing (i.e., good writing not separable from good thinking); preparing syllabi; preparing writing assignments; commenting on student writing; grading student writing; plagiarism; citation; journaling; and annotated bibliographies. I found the work on preparing assignments and commenting on student writing most useful. For the former, the instructor commented copiously on my draft syllabus and assignment, and for the latter, there was a very useful handout that the class worked through that I still use as the standard I am aiming for when I make comments on students papers. Again, the most beneficial element of the course was the opportunity to go beyond just listening to a knowledgeable teacher and to attempt to implement that advice while getting constructive feedback. I had no illusions after I completed this course that I was a good teacher of writing, but I had enough instruction and practice in preparing and grading assignments that I know the routine, could appear competent to the students, and was on the road to improvement and competency. Not everybody at Holy Cross needs this level of instruction, but for those that do, this would be an easy and enjoyable way to get it. Also, I think it was healthy to see the world from a student perspective, at least every once in a while." -M. Koss
