Fourth, Sixth, and Ninth President of Holy Cross

Rev. Anthony Ciampi, S.J.,  fourth president of Holy Cross   Anthony F. Ciampi was born in Rome, January 29, 1816 and entered the Society of Jesus in September, 1832. During his studies in Italy he volunteered to work in the United States. He was ordained a priest in 1847. 
   During his long career he served three times as President of Holy Cross; President of Loyola College, Baltimore; as missionary in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island; as Rector of Jesuit churches in Washington, D.C. and Maryland. During his first term as President of Holy Cross a disastrous fire destroyed Fenwick Hall and part of the East Wing. Father Ciampi directed the efforts to rebuild the College, which was reopened in 1853. 
   Rev. Ciampi died on November 24, 1893 while serving as parish priest at St. Aloysius Church, Washington, D.C.
