The Middle Ages is an extensive period dating from the 4th century to the 15th century across Europe and also major portions of the Middle East. Although Christianity dominates the west, Islam deeply influenced the art of the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Spain. Architecture assumes a major role with the development of the Gothic, the only serious innovation in building between the classical era and the modern world. The varied topics include the arts of fresco and panel painting, manuscript illumination, stained glass, sculpture, and metalworking, the latter producing highly valuable objects for liturgical uses. Courses in Medieval Art frequently receive credit in both Arts and Religion Common requirements.
