Introductory Art History

Introduction to the Visual Arts stresses the acquisition of skills of visual analysis, both orally and in writing. The course frequently incorporates art of the classical and medieval era as well as non-western art of Africa, the Middle East and Asia. It often treats a diversity of forms such as painting, printmaking, sculpture, and photography. Working with the collections of the Worcester Art Museum is an integral part of the course.

Survey of Art presents a systematic treatment the major periods of western art since 1300: Renaissance, Baroque, and Modern Art. The course emphasizes developments in painting, sculpture and architecture and explores the social and historical factors that influenced the art. This course is recommended for Studio Art majors and minors since it gives students the most comprehensive overview of all western developments and major artists.
