Placement Advice

No matter what your level, here's how to find out what Spanish class to take at Holy Cross

If you are planning to study Spanish at any level at Holy Cross (whether you are beginning the language, continuing Spanish studied in high school, or are a native or heritage Spanish speaker), you must take the Spanish Background Questionnaire as a first step to determining the appropriate entry course for enrollment. The Questionnaire, accessible through Moodle, takes into account previous experience with Spanish and any advanced placement (AP or IB) test scores that you have earned to determine whether you need to take the Spanish Placement exam.

Native and heritage speakers of Spanish (students who speak or hear Spanish at home or in their local community but who may not have formally studied the language) should also take the Spanish Background Questionnaire to find out what level will best suit their abilities and preparation.

If you have taken advanced placement exams (AP or IB), you should wait to take the Spanish Background Questionnaire until you have received your scores (usually by early July).

Classes of 2020 and 2021 may access the questionnaire by selecting MOODLE – Course Management System from the Holy Cross login page. Then log in to MOODLE using your Holy Cross USER ID and Password. Select Spanish Placement on the Placements & Assessments box on the upper right. You will be taken to the Self enrolment screen. Click the Enroll Me button to continue to the Spanish Background Questionnaire. Classes of 2018 and 2019, you may gain access to the Questionnaire by emailing edtech@holycross.edu or by contacting Chair of the Spanish Department. You will be given directions for accessing the Background Questionnaire, which will advise you of your placement options, including whether you need to take the Spanish Placement Exam, linked directly to the Questionnaire.
