Biography
Praised for her “sense of joyful virtuosity” (South Florida Classical Review), cellist Julia Yang is a dynamic and versatile artist seeking to dialogue through music with the world at large. As founding member of the acclaimed Merz Trio, Yang has won first prizes in the international chamber music competition scene including the prestigious Naumburg, Fischoff, Concert Artists Guild and Chesapeake Competitions. An active performer, Yang has been featured on Performance Today in live solo performances and interviews with Fred Child, and has performed as soloist with the New World Symphony, Central Florida Symphony Orchestra, and Northwestern Symphony Orchestra, among others. Performing 40 concerts a year with her Merz Trio along with additional solo recitals and other chamber collaborations, Yang has upcoming recital debuts with Merz Trio at the Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall, and Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
Yang has wide experience in the orchestral field, performing as principal cellist under conductors such as Michael Tilson Thomas, Susanna Malkki, James Gaffigan, John Adams, and Leonard Slatkin, and touring as principal cellist of the New World Symphony in Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. She has also performed in chamber music festivals including Marlboro Music Festival, Poland’s Krzyzowa Music, Aldeburgh Music, Yellow Barn and Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival.
Invested in the importance of collaboration with artists from other disciplines, Yang has developed and produced shows and music videos with dancers, puppeteers, directors, lighting designers, sommeliers, and chefs, in an effort to create conversation between art forms and audiences, and seek meaningful relevance for classical music in a diverse and contemporary world.
