How to Apply for the Concentration

You may declare a concentration in Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies at any time.

Please be sure to first review the Requirements section for the Concentration program. It will also provide you with a link to a fillable Course Planning Worksheet to enter the LALC courses you have taken and those you hope to take in the future. Complete the worksheet, and then email Prof. Daniel Frost, Director of the Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies program to discuss your course plans.

To then declare the concentration:

  • On the STAR system, under My Academics, click on the Change of Academic Plan. Under the Student Forms and Flows heading, click on Declare Major/Minor/Concentration and follow the instructions for declaring the concentration

How to Apply for the Major

You may begin the process for declaring a Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies (LALC) major whenever you are ready to do so.

To get started, click on the Requirements section, to select the LALC major program that you wish to enroll in.  It will provide you with a full explanation of the requirements for the program.  It will also provide you with a link to a Course Planning Worksheet to enter the LALC courses you have taken and those you hope to take in future. Email the Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies Director, Prof. Daniel Frost, to set up an appointment to discuss your plans and review the worksheet.

After your meeting, the next step is the application. The LALC major is managed through the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (CIS). There is a special CIS Major Application that you must complete. The application includes:

  • A brief statement of your academic experience, motivations, and plans for the major.
  • An unofficial transcript and a resumé
  • A 4-year course plan showing completed and planned courses (based on your worksheet)
  • Contact information for your faculty recommenders (you need two for a major).  At least one of these faculty sponsors should come from a department related to your proposed LALC major.  The recommendations are electronic forms sent to the designated recommender that assess the planned program of study and/or the student’s abilities.

IMPORTANT: The application portal for these forms opens on the first day of classes and there is one deadline each semester when all of your materials must be submitted.  In the fall semester, the deadline is the first Friday in October.  In the spring semester, the deadline is the second Friday in February. Note: Students must have their major approved before they can do a Change of Academic Plan.

Please see the full details by visiting the Student-Designed Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Minor/Major Program on the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies website.
