Dear Campus Community,
Starting today, we will immediately halt all work on our two ongoing capital projects — the Joanne Chouinard-Luth Recreation and Wellness Center and the Prior Performing Arts Center. While construction work has ceased, workers will remain on campus for an extra day or two to ensure the sites are safely secured.
This decision was made by the College and our partners, Skanska and Dimeo Construction, after Gov. Baker's reclassification of some construction projects last week, and the City of Worcester’s decision to suspend public-construction projects and inspectional services on Friday. We have also seen difficulty in acquiring the kind of protective gear required to allow these jobs to continue safely.
At this point, we don’t know how long this suspension of work will last. Therefore we can’t say what effect it will have on our construction timelines and the eventual opening of these important new buildings. We know that delays in these long-awaited projects will be disappointing. In particular, having a dedicated, modern wellness facility is vital to our campus.
Gov. Baker’s order is in effect until at least May 4. The College and its partners in these projects will reevaluate restarting construction when that order is lifted and when it is safe for workers to go back to work. We will keep the campus community updated when we have news to share about the reopening of these projects and their updated timelines.
Thank you for your understanding. We continue to wish you all health and safety as we navigate this crisis together.
