Student Questions and Answers

Posted August 23, 2021

Leading up to the start of the fall semester, the COVID Core Team met with the Student Government Association to hear our students' concerns and answer their questions about the fall semester. Below are answers to frequently asked student questions about how we're dealing with COVID this semester.

Athletics, Recreation; Extracurricular Involvement

Will there be intramural and/or club sports this semester?

Will the basketball courts be open to all students?

  • Students will have full access to The Jo, including the courts.

How will clubs meet? Who should students contact to reserve spaces for meetings?

  • Clubs may choose to meet in person. Room reservations will be available through myHC.

Will the gym in Loyola be open?

Academics

Will office hours be in-person?

  • Faculty members have been given the option to hold office hours in person or via Zoom. As always they will post their office hours (along with a Zoom link if appropriate) on their door and on the syllabus.

Has there been conversation among faculty about how to handle group work?

  • Yes, faculty have been thinking about how they will handle group work.

Will students still have the opportunity to reserve classrooms/other spaces as study spaces like this past Spring?

  • The campus will be open as it has been in the past, and students can study in available classrooms.

Will students still have to swipe into Dinand?

  • No.

Campus Life

Will students be allowed to visit other dorms? How many students will be allowed to do so?

  • Students may visit one another’s residence halls.

Will masks be required within residence halls, specifically on students’ own floor and in bathrooms?

  • Masks will be required indoors for all students, faculty and staff, vaccinated and unvaccinated, at least until September 10 at which time we will evaluate whether we can relax some restrictions. Unvaccinated people will continue to wear masks and maintain distance indoors for the remainder of the academic year.

Will there be capacity limits in different indoor campus spaces (library, gym, etc.)

  • Not at this time.

Will groups of students still need to wear masks around each other inside if everyone in that group is fully vaccinated?

  • Masks will be required indoors for all students, faculty and staff, vaccinated and unvaccinated, at least until September 10 at which time we will evaluate whether we can relax some restrictions. Unvaccinated people will continue to wear masks and maintain distance indoors for the remainder of the academic year.

Will there be any restrictions put in place specifically for students who are not vaccinated?

  • Non-fully vaccinated students must wear masks and maintain distance indoors for the remainder of the academic year.

  • Non-fully vaccinated students must take COVID-19 tests at a higher frequency.

Will we have to sit socially distanced from students in places like the dining hall, classrooms, and library?

  • No. Fully vaccinated students do not have to maintain distance.

Are we still having a fall concert?

  • Plans are underway for an outdoor fall concert on Freshman Field.

Dining

How will Kimball be operating? Will it be like this past spring (socially distanced tables and grab and go) or more so like a normal school year?

  • Normal school year operation.

How long will food be grab and go from Kimball?

  • Initially only, and as needed in the event of some sort of outbreak.

Can we eat in Kimball?

  • Yes

Are the hours for the dining hall going to change this year in comparison to the fall?

  • Dining hours will be slightly reduced from normal times in facilities that will be open. This is due to challenging staffing issues in the hospitality industry. All restaurants and food service providers are facing similar challenges.

Will places like lower be open 7 days a week?

  • Due to staffing challenges in the hospitality industry as a whole, for now, lower kimball is not planned to be open this year.

Will Cafe Babel and the science cafe be open?

  • The science cafe will be open. Cafe Babel will not, due to the aforementioned staffing challenges.

COVID Specific

Are we still going to have to do HC clear every day?

  • Initially, yes. This may change for fully vaccinated students as we move through the term.

If a fully vaccinated student is in close contact with someone who tested positive, what steps will they need to take? Will they need to isolate?

  • They will not need to isolate. They will be asked to mask for a period and test more frequently.

Could you provide more detail about what quarantine and isolation spaces will look like in the Fall? What would it look like in terms of capacity and logistics?

  • We have 25 rooms at a local hotel in Auburn (our own floor), and we have several spaces off-campus for transitory or inclement weather quarantine.

What plans does the college have in a worst case scenario where there is a large outbreak at the beginning of the semester? What would quantify as a “significant” outbreak?

  • We don’t believe this is likely to unfold. But in the event that it does, we feel we have enough space and resources to handle the initial outbreak and bring it under control through our IQ processes.

What happens in a worst case scenario where total cases outnumber isolation/quarantine spaces?

  • We will likely find more I/Q space in the event that this unlikely scenario unfolds.
