'I Love it Here' 2.04 - Culpepper's
Culpepper's has always held a special place in my heart, ever since I was a freshman. I used to walk to Culpepper's on a regular basis to have breakfast and to buy fresh bread. One reason why this is a key place for Crusaders to take advantage of is the location. Unlike other restaurants in Worcester, where getting there can be a struggle, it's quite easy to visit Culpepper's. I can even give you the directions now: Walk down College St. Cross the busy street, with caution, and then walk past Wendy's. And, basically, that's it. When I was a freshman, I felt a strong desire to feel a part of this city, since I knew nothing about it. Little things like walking to Culpepper's, I feel, helped me make Worcester my own.
What I know a lot of people go there for is their cakes. I've had many cakes from Culpepper's over the years, and as far as bakery cakes go, these are quite good. Very moist, and the frosting isn't too sugary, a common problem I have with bakery cakes. Though the cakes are good, I'm extremely partial to the pastries and breads they have each day fresh. I've always loved local bakeries and such treats as eclairs and fresh white bread, so this is why I've trekked down the hill so many times.
Another reason why you should check out Culpepper's is the restaurant up front. They serve breakfast and lunch, both of which consist of fairly decent cheap food, and open rather early, good for those who pull all-nighters or who stay up late and want a bite to eat. The meal wasn't the best I've ever had, but given the prices, I was impressed at the quality of food. You also get to observe a lot of the locals on their breaks, and many of them seem to have been going here since they were knee-high to a grasshopper, so that's always fun.
Can you do better than Culpepper's? Of course. But I feel that you need to at least try Culpepper's at least once, since it's so close and getting there is half the fun. I urge you to try out the bakery, since I feel that's where Culpepper's real strengths are. So basically, this place isn't the best out there, but it's definitely worth the trip and also should be a trip you make at least once in your College career here at Holy Cross. If you can't get out to a real diner or bakery, Culpepper's combines the two experiences and delivers to the best of their abilities.
