Close to 90 students serve in leadership positions as members of the Residence Life staff. Each year there are roughly 10 Student Resident Directors and Head Resident Assistants, in addition to about 80 Resident Assistants (RAs) in the residence halls on campus.
Trained and supervised by the Residence Life staff, RAs are current Holy Cross students selected for their maturity, leadership, and sense of responsibility to staff the residence halls. Each RA attends to a floor of approximately 30 to 60 residents, works with a peer staff of approximately four to 12 RAs, and reports directly to a Student Resident Director (SRD), or a Community Development Coordinator (CDC).
They work with the residents to develop and maintain an educational environment conducive to the attainment of academic success, individual growth and the development of community expectations. RAs also communicate and enforce College policies and regulations in the residence halls.
These students go through a rigorous selection process, followed by training each summer and throughout the academic year. They serve as role models to their peers and student leaders on the Holy Cross campus, in addition to modeling the department philosophy described below.
Holy Cross has a firm belief that living in the residence halls provides students with an essential element of the educational process and the opportunity to develop as a person. The Office of Residence Life and the Resident Assistants are charged with creating a living and learning environment in which students are challenged to:
- take full advantage of the academic and co-curricular educational opportunities;
- develop a sense of identity and purpose which allows for personal satisfaction and meaningful interaction with others; and
- recognize and exercise the opportunities and responsibilities associated with citizenship in the residence hall and campus communities.
For more detailed information on the expectations and responsibilities of RAs and other student staff positions please read the official position descriptions.
