Passions: being a residence assistant (RA), Caribbean and African Student Assemblage (CASA), debating
Sociology is the perfect major for me because I like to understand why things like public education are the way they are. In my high school, there were a lot of disruptive kids who didn’t take their education seriously, and that was very frustrating for me to see. Now I know more about the social factors that caused them to behave that way. I also love to debate in class, and to gather information about all sides of an issue before I take a position. Sociology is great for that, and so are the small classes at Holy Cross.
When I started out here, I wondered if my leadership skills would transfer from high school to college, where everyone has been a leader. CASA took me in and became my home on campus. My friends and mentors in CASA made me believe in myself and seek out leadership roles on campus, such as being an RA. Last spring, I was inspired by my “Bridging Diversity” course to have a brunch where people on my hall could discuss the challenges of diversity. It’s a topic students here are interested in, but they need to be encouraged to talk about it. I believe in dialogue, and having friends from different groups on campus puts me in touch with other perspectives. That gives me the confidence to bring people together.
