Passions: volunteering with SPUD, creating new molecules, a good cup of coffee
Holy Cross has opened my eyes in many ways, redefining the way I view myself and others. Now my whole life is changing. The catalyst was two Holy Cross experiences in Latin America last summer – a Chaplains’ Office trip to El Salvador followed by study abroad in Costa Rica. The people I met and the injustice I witnessed forced me to confront and reexamine my faith, which I had never allowed to get complicated. I’m half Guatemalan, and the trips introduced me to a part of myself that I never really knew. The way I relate to others also changed, and now I really care about getting to know many different kinds of people.
These experiences also confirmed my desire to become a doctor. I’ve seen how many broken people there are in our world, and I want to be able to travel to places like Latin America and serve them – not just as an orthopedic surgeon, but to help heal the whole person. I changed my chemistry major to a minor so I could take full advantage of Holy Cross, including the College Honors Program. I’ve always loved chemistry, and I’ve had incredible opportunities here. My research with Professor Farrell resulted in a published paper and a poster presentation at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society.
