The U.S. Department of State offers opportunities to get first hand experience in the field of foreign affairs. Whether you work in the U.S. or at one of 265-plus posts around the world, you will help the Department create a more secure, prosperous and democratic world.  Students from all majors can make a real difference by helping build and keep positive relationships between America and the rest of the world.

These internships are excellent preparation for future careers in both the Civil Service and the Foreign Service.  Intern duties and responsibilities may vary according to post or office of assignment.  For instance, interns may write reports on human rights issues, assist with trade negotiations, assist with citizen's services or visa work, help Americans in distress abroad, or organize conferences or visits of high-level officials.  Others may research economic or environmental issues, write news stories, work on web pages or help produce electronic journals.

Location: Washington, DC and Various Locations Worldwide

Qualifications:

  • Class of 2011
  • A U.S. citizen
  • Able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

Compensation: These internships are unpaid.  Housing at the Embassies is provided at no cost to the interns.

Students wishing to be considered for a paid internship must also provide a copy of their Student Aid Report (SAR) that includes their Expected Family Contribution number (EFC) and answer question #30 in the application. Only the Student Aid Reports issued by the Department of Education will be accepted. In addition, Student Aid Reports submitted without the EFC number will not be considered.

All paid and unpaid interns assigned to Washington, D.C. and using public transportation are eligible for the Metrochek Transit Benefit program that helps to defray the cost of traveling to and from work.

Unless otherwise stipulated, transportation to and from Washington or overseas posts is the responsibility of the intern.
