Association of Retarded Citizens of the South Shore

Summer Fellowship

Agency Description: The Association for Retarded Citizens of the South Shore (ARC of the South Shore) is a non-profit, multi-service organization dedicated to providing the highest quality of services to individuals who are mentally retarded, developmentally disabled, or at-risk for development delay.

ARC of the South Shore serves individuals of all ages by providing an extensive network of therapeutic, residential, employment, day habilitative, early intervention, and supportive services. ARC of the South Shore is a family-oriented, community-based agency, which provides services to communities immediately south of Boston. 

ARC of the South Shore has opportunities for two interns, one at each of their day programs.

Harbor Industries & Employment Services Intern

Harbor Industries & Employoment Services provides employment opportunities to adults with developmental disabilities.  This program provides job skills training to individuals and aids each person in finding employment that is meaningful to them.  Harbor Industries assists adults with disabilities learn job skills in a workshop setting and also in community jobs. 

As an intern you will work directly with the participants in the program under the supervision of program staff. In the workshop setting, this involves setting up work, instructing people on how to do the job, quality controlling the finished work, and interacting with individuals on a regular basis.

Day Habilitation Program Intern

Our Day Habilitation Program's goal is to provide a series of planned, coordinated, goal-oriented services that are designed to improve the functional abilities of a developmentally disabled person. Such services include training in self-direction, activities of daily living, hygiene, socialization, and community integration. These individuals engage in activities other than vocational tasks and are assisted to gain more independence and control over their everyday lives.

As an intern you will work directly with the participants in the program under the supervision of program staff. In the Day Hab program you will also work side by side with the individuals with disabilities. Here you will float among the 5 small groups and take part in setting up various activities and assisting the people we serve to participate. This could entail cooking, crafts, exercise groups, community trips, etc.

These programs are located in Weymouth, MA. The positions are based on a Monday through Friday schedule from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., for an 8 week basis.

Qualifications: This internship is open to all members from the classes of 2009, 2010 or 2011 who are residents of the greater Boston area.

Compensation: This internship carries a $3,200 stipend from ARC of the South Shore, the Holy Cross Club of Boston and the Holy Cross General Alumni Association. $1,100 will be paid directly to the student and $2,100 will be credited directly to the student's Holy Cross account.
