J. P. Morgan - Private Bank
Summer Analyst
Our Private Banking summer internship program offers a unique opportunity to segue into a successful full-time career. As a Summer Analyst, you will have an extraordinary opportunity to explore Private Banking and gain insight into our strategy, products and business groups. We hire most of our full-time Analysts from the pool of Summer Analysts, so you may very well receive an offer before you head back to campus in the fall.
The magnitude of a Summer Analyst's job
From the start, you will have an opportunity to learn from the best in the business and make valuable contributions to your team. You will work and socialize with outstanding colleagues, and create your own professional network that will help you take the first steps in your career.
You will support an integrated team or an investment solutions team, working closely with senior professionals. Read more about these teams in our Private Banking business area description. Depending on your role, you will help devise customized financial strategies for existing or prospective clients, get a taste of a wide range of proprietary models, conduct research and analysis, or work on product development. You will work on a project with peers that include a group presentation at the end of the summer.
You will also have the chance to support teams in various locations throughout the U.S. Most roles are based in New York, but we also offer opportunities in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Miami, Palm Beach, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Scottsdale, and Washington D.C.
Responsibility from the start
As a Private Banking Summer Analyst, your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting client research, performance reviews, net worth calculations, account allocations, and assisting in the prospecting of new clients
- Collaborating on growth strategy research and presentation for specific areas, including prospective clients, key economic drivers, and analysis of competition
- Developing knowledge and understanding of proprietary tools through research and analysis of fund information and current market activities
- Completing flow reports
- Developing, strategizing and completing projects that will assist area-specific teams in expanding their client base and improving existing processes
Training and development
You will receive world-class, hands-on training throughout your internship and the tools you need to succeed. You will attend a three-day orientation program that will introduce you to senior leaders, products and business groups. You will also participate in a performance management process where you will set and monitor goals with your manager throughout the summer. You will participate in a mid and end of summer evaluation.
Once a week, you will take part in sessions organized by current Analysts that offer tips in the workplace and educate you on the various analyst roles across Asset Management. You will also have the opportunity to go to other weekly sessions: Senior Speakers, an opportunity to meet distinguished leaders in the firm, and Markets Drills, an opportunity to discuss and ask questions about the latest happenings in the financial markets. In addition, each Summer Analyst will have a mentor to help them get acquainted with J.P. Morgan. You will also get a chance to work on a project with peers that includes a group presentation at the end of the summer.
You will begin to understand the outlook of our Asset Management businesses - why we think the way we do and how current market conditions contribute to that. The facilitators of these sessions are quite candid and will share with you the lessons they've learned and the ways their careers evolved throughout time at J.P. Morgan. See photos from summer events in our Media Zone.

What we look for
We recruit students from many backgrounds - but having strong analytical skills is a must. The work is challenging and exciting, and being able to use both qualitative and quantitative tools to analyze complex financial situations is key. We look for excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work well as an integral member of a team, as well as the initiative, drive and confidence to complete projects with limited supervision.
If you don't have a strong financial or business background, be sure you can tell your story: be able to demonstrate your quantitative and qualitative aptitude both scholastically (SATs, coursework) and practically (former jobs, for example) and be ready to articulate how your background will enhance your career at J.P. Morgan (you can find tips in our Advice Center under not a business major ). For placement on a U.S.-based Latin American team, fluent language skills and cultural knowledge are essential. All Summer Analyst candidates must be rising seniors and have a minimum GPA of 3.2.
Our goal is to know if there's a mutual fit by summer's end, when we offer successful Summer Analysts full-time positions for the following year.
