Edward Street Child Services
Research Intern
Edward Street Child Services works with all of the center based early education and care programs in Worcester. Our mission is to improve the delivery of early learning services in Worcester.
The organization recently received a $390,000.00 grant through the Workforce Competitiveness Trust Fund to develop a system to assist early educators at 4 of its largest centers to earn their college degrees. Edward Street has also submitted a proposal to the United Way to expand the model to the rest of its approximately 28 centers. Edward Street faces the issue that once its teachers earn their degrees they often go to the public schools where they work fewer days, hours per day and earn significantly more and receive better - or any - benefits.
Edward Street is currently seeking to develop mechanisms to reward staff and is seeking an intern to study what is being done across the country, where the money comes from (public or private), how it is distributed (salary increase, salary subsidy, annual bonus, etc) and if the models are successful in retaining staff. The intern will draft a document that puts all of the information together in a succinct and easy to read format to make the argument for change to legislators and funders. The intern will also review other models for tuition assistance for parents. For example, in Minneapolis the major employers have set up an endowed fund that subsidizes care for the many children who fall through the cracks for subsidized care. Many children in Worcester are on a wait-list for subsidized care already and that list will be growing as a result of recent cuts to non-profit organizations.
This 10-week, full-time internship will carry a stipend from Holy Cross
