Apostolate for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing, Diocese of Providence
Summer Intern
Intern should know basic sign language.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Help with the monthly newsletter.
- If there are field trips, act as one of the chaperones.
- If there are events for Deaf people, attend as a delegate for Fr. Joe Bruce.
- Help set up signed Sunday Masses in the parishes by contacting the pastors or secretaries.
- Interview manual interpreters who interpret Sunday Masses and the sacraments about their experiences as "church" interpreters and write an article for the Rhode Island Catholic newspaper. (The name was changed from the Providence Visitor to Rhode Island Catholic last summer.)
- Home visits.
- Office work.
- Visit Deaf people who are in hospitals, nursing homes or homebound.
- Visit parishes on Sunday mornings that have interpreted Masses and meet with the Deaf parishioners and get their names and address, e-mail addresses.
- Visit families with deaf children
- Help teach hearing children learn sign language at St Charles Borromeo Church summer Bible camp for children
Hours to be determined after the first meeting with the intern. (40 hours per week) Days: Usually Sunday through Thursday.

Qualifications: Class of 2010, 2011 or 2012. You must be from Rhode Island to apply. Intern should know basic sign language.

FYI - Father Bruce is a graduate of Holy Cross from the class of 1973 and some of you have met him at the monthly ASL masses on campus.
