SAFEPLAN Advocate Intern

Daybreak Resources, a program of the YWCA of Central Massachusetts, is looking for mature, committed interns to serve as advocates to victims of domestic violence.

The intern would provide victims of domestic violence the following support in a court-based setting: Information on safety planning; explanation of the legal process involved in obtaining and maintaining M.G.L. c.209A protective orders and other legal options; accompaniment into the courtroom and in-court advocacy; and information and referrals to community resources available to battered persons.

Responsibilities:

  • Meet victims coming to court to file for M.G.L. c 209A protective orders.
  • Interview victims and assess needs. Provide support for victims as proceed through the civil restraining order process.
  • Assist victims with filling out 209A protective order (i.e. court, police, legal process) forms and accompany victims before the judge if court allows and victim desires.
  • Interface with victim witness program and other court personnel.
  • Interface with our community based organizations and other Daybreak program components.
  • Responsible for the collection and reporting of all relevant monthly statistics to Daybreak and SAFEPLAN.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

You MUST be able to attend a SAFEPLAN training prior to beginning your internship. Your mileage and lunch will be reimbursed for those three days.

Qualifications: Class of 2009 or 2010.

Counseling, Psychology, Sociology course work, or the equivalent experience. Prior experience working with battered women. Knowledge of legal issues affecting battered women. Demonstrated sensitivity to issues affecting battered women of diverse cultures. Bi-Lingual, Bi-cultural preferred. Maturity and sound judgements required. Car and valid drivers license required.

Compensation: This is a Lilly Foundation funded internship. It carries a $4,000 stipend for the 10 week internship. The intern must participate in a reflection activity at the beginning of the internship as well as complete several short written reflections over the course of the summer.
