CIGNA

Actuarial Executive Development Summer Intern Program

At CIGNA, our full-time program, the Actuarial Executive Development Program (AEDP) offers a clear career path to a senior financial-management position. In fact, because a strong financial background is so highly valued here, many of the program's 150+ participants have gone on to become financial officers, operational leaders, division presidents and executive officers across our lines of business.

The purpose of the Summer Internship Program is to give you an opportunity to experience life as an actuary at CIGNA. By summer's end, you'll understand:

  • why actuaries are vital to our lines of business;
  • how the AEDP supports career development and cultivates leaders;
  • CIGNA's role in the employee-benefits industry;
  • the company, our actuarial community and the region.

The summer program is also an opportunity for us to take a close look at your capabilities. We expect you to work hard, be accountable for your work and take advantage of growth opportunities.  You'll be treated much the same way we treat our full-time employees. You'll plunge into a meaningful work assignment right away. In fact, Summer Interns who've returned as full-time Program Associates have been quite pleased to see that their work was implemented and still in use.

You'll undergo extensive on-the-job training and attend development workshops conducted by some of the best actuaries in the industry. You'll attend the summer speaker series, a unique opportunity to hear from our own actuaries. During the last series, our Summer Interns heard from several speakers including:

  • Jon Rubin, FSA, CFO, CIGNA HealthCare, discussed business strategy, the role of the financial officer and how he has relied on his actuarial training throughout his career;
  • Brad Miller, FSA, HealthCare Chief Underwriting Officer, presented on the importance of financial leadership and how his actuarial background has allowed him to succeed in multiple non-traditional roles.

Exam Process
A key part of becoming an actuary is passing a series of standardized tests administered by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) or Casualty Actuary Society (CAS).  These exams typically take between 4-7 years to finish and require a great deal of motivation as well as strong analytical skills.  Anyone entering the field must be willing to commit themselves to the process.
