Boston EMS

Office of the Chief Intern

Reports to: Chief of Department, EMS or Designee

Boston Emergency Medical Services, a Bureau of the Boston Public Health Commission, is one of the Nation's oldest providers of pre-hospital care. Our highly trained professionals work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year on the streets of Boston, deftly providing state-of-the-art emergency care with compassion and dignity to Boston's sick and injured. Boston EMS has long been a leader in the field of emergency preparedness. Even before September 11, 2001 and Hurricane Katrina, Boston EMS staff worked to define plans and solutions to the dangers and problems posed by terrorism and natural disasters. Boston EMS works closely with the Mayor's Office, the Boston Public Health Commission, and the other Boston public safety agencies to ensure effective response and mitigation of the medical consequences of disasters. Through the Boston Metropolitan Medical Response System (MMRS) - one of the first in the country, Office of Public Health Preparedness, Special Operations Division, and DelValle Institute for Emergency Preparedness, Boston EMS provides coordination and leadership in the medical community, including hospitals and health centers, on issues of training, equipping, and preparing for a major terrorist incident or other disaster.

The summer intern will be involved in aspects of implementing and managing projects and/or initiatives for Boston EMS Emergency Preparedness programs. Projects may include working with Boston MMRS to develop planning for mass care within the City, as well as working on developing more effective emergency preparedness coordination within the Boston medical community. The candidate will work closely with the Chief of Department of Boston EMS, members of the Boston EMS Emergency Preparedness programs, as well as with other organizations throughout the city. There will be opportunities to participate in Emergency Preparedness related training, planning, and coordination sessions. The candidate will perform other duties as required.

No previous experience is required, although an interest in EMS and/or emergency preparedness issues is preferred.
