Summer Fellowship

Description:  Bloomfield Senior Services is a vital part of a caring community that values the contributions of its residents age 60 and over. The department is committed to serving the needs of a diverse population from the more active, newly-retired, to the frail and homebound

Bloomfield's Senior Center is the site of many outstanding recreational, social, cultural and educational programs and activities.  Whether it’s an informative and entertaining newsletter, an involved and active Senior Club, a current affairs group which encourages open discussion or a host of other activities designed for older residents, the Senior Center has it all.

Position Description:  The Senior Services Intern will work assisting in the operation of the Senior Center, including planning and implementation of a wide variety of educational, recreational and creative activity programming.  Work involves planning, organizing, conducting and evaluating varied programs and activities.

Duties include supervision of volunteers, coordination of events, including interdepartmental facilitation.  Work requires that the intern have good knowledge, skill and ability in the philosophy of gerontological programs and a sensitivity to the understanding of the needs of the elderly.

Works under the general direction of the Director of Senior Services.

 Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement programs and/or activities. 
  • Supervise volunteers. 
  • Contribute to the monthly newsletter. 
  • Assist with the meals on wheels program. 
  • Assist with the Community Cafe

The Senior Services Intern will learn about public relations, event planning and the general operation of a municipal Senior Center.  The Intern will also have the opportunity to meet with the Town Leaders of Bloomfield, CT.

Qualifications: Class of 2009, 2010 and 2011.  You must be from the greater Hartford area to apply for this position.

Requirements:  The Senior Services Intern should:

  • Possess an interest in gerontology 
  • Have strong oral and written communication skills. 
  • Be detail oriented and project driven.
  • Have strong customer service skills.
  • Have an interest in municipal organizations.
  • Be self-motivated
  • Have a driver’s license

Compensation:  The stipend for this program is $2000.  $1000 will be paid directly by the Center to the student as a salary, the remainder will be paid by the General Alumni Association and the Hartford Club to the student's tuition account.
