Bennett Cancer Center

Cancer Research Intern

The purpose of the internship is to give a college student interested in the biomedical science exposure to clinical oncology and hematology, with emphasis on clinical trials. The student will work in a research group within a seven-physician oncology/hematology practice. The research staff includes 5 clinical trials coordinators and 2 secretaries. Dr. Sal Del Prete is the director of the research group, and the student would report directly to him.

The research group is involved in a wide array of clinical trials, mostly phases II and III. The student would be expected to assist in data collection for a number of these trials, thereby allowing the student to learn how this complex part of research is accomplished. In addition, the student will have the opportunity to meet with our patients as part of the research team.

Another aspect of the internship is to allow the student to design and implement a unique trial that he/she would set up and see through. This might require more than one summer to accomplish, although the design could allow for completion in one summer. The goal would be to complete an original study and publish the results. The applicant would be expected to design the trial prior to arrival at the Bennett Cancer Center for the internship. Dr. Del Prete must grant approval of the research concept. The trial could be in any of several facets of cancer such as: quality of life issues; treatment issues; patients' perceptions of the treatment process; as well as other interesting alternatives.

Since the cancer treatment team at the Center also involves work with surgeons and radiation oncologists, the student could use this opportunity to spend some planned time with these members of the team.
