Autism Speaks
Etiology Science Internship
Autism Speaks is the largest research and advocacy organization dedicated to advocacy and funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments and cure for autism.
Our science program is broken down into four primary workgroups as follows:
- Etiology - focuses on the areas of genetics, environmental sciences and epidemiology to help gain a better understanding of the causes and susceptibilities involved with autism
- Biology - focuses on the areas of neuroscience, physiology and molecular biology to gain a better understanding of the pathology and underlying biological mechanisms that generate autism
- Diagnosis - focuses on the areas of behavioral and biological methods that will lead to better diagnosis and characterization of the autism phenotypes
- Treatment - focuses on the areas of behavioral, biomedical and technological methods of treatment and intervention services
We currently have a full-time internship available, starting early June, 2009 to early August, 2009 in the Etiology workgroup. The position will be based out of our Park Avenue office in Manhattan, NY. Business hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Science Projects/Assignments for 10 weeks
Provides research to complete a Background Report by identifying (1) key autism advocacy organizations around the world to help Autism Speaks better understand their history, membership, achievements and current priorities, (2) key autism service providers around the world to help Autism Speaks better understand the structure, impact and unmet needs of currently available services in various territories, and (3) available biobanks for research in key territories, including their history, support, law governing sample sharing and collaboration, and scientific priorities.
This Background Report will allow us to have a better sense of the landscape for mental health research in those territories by understanding what's being done, how, and by whom. The resulting report will directly inform the development of the recently introduced Autism Speaks Global Autism Public Health initiative. (Project estimation: 75-100% time)
Update and develop answers to FAQ for “Contact Us” specific to genetics, environmental sciences, and epidemiology (Project estimation: 25% time)
