Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.
Summer Intern
Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. is seeking qualified candidates for its Summer Intern Program. This program presents a hands-on learning experience in a supportive, mentoring environment that provides participants with a realistic look at an insurance brokering career.
Consider a Career in Brokering
Have you considered the insurance industry as a possible career path? Gallagher’s Summer Intern Program was created to dispel some of the existing misconceptions surrounding careers in the insurance industry and attract new talent to the field. In our program, we’ll teach you basic insurance concepts, and show you what a broker does and where Gallagher fits in the world of insurance. The experience provides you with a chance to assess a career in insurance, while Gallagher evaluates your potential as a future broker.
Although you might not have heard a lot about what brokers do, this career path offers tremendous growth potential. Ask any successful broker what he or she likes best about this job and you’ll likely hear some version of this response: "Freedom to create my own success." As an intern, you’ll gain some perspective on what this means. Most of our summer interns discover that a career as a broker appeals to them and many of the participants become full-time employees after graduation.
Program Overview
Gallagher offers paid internship opportunities for upcoming juniors and seniors. Each summer consists of a nine-week program that includes classroom instruction in our Home Office in Itasca, Illinois. During this week you’ll be introduced to many facets of both the insurance industry and our company. You’ll also have a chance to meet our division heads, operational leaders and successful producers (sales professionals) who serve as instructors — many of whom are former Gallagher interns. The seminar week is an opportunity for interns from all participating branches to meet. Most interns consider this to be a highlight of the program.
Following this week of training, you’ll return to your sponsoring branch office to spend the remaining weeks of the program. During this time, you’ll follow rotational assignments introducing you to various departments. A real plus to this portion of the program is experiencing Gallagher’s student-friendly culture. The primary activity in the program is to shadow successful brokers as they work and participate in different phases of the sales cycle. As an intern, you are not responsible for selling, but you will gain an understanding of the process while helping to prepare proposals, gathering data and accompanying producers as they make sales calls, meet with clients and negotiate with underwriters.
The following is a partial list of daily activities in which interns are asked to participate:
- Prospecting
- Putting together renewal applications - gathering renewal information and updating values.
- Making certain that their department is meeting professional standards as outlined by the audit committee.
- Going out on initial sales calls.
- Going out on service visits.
- Going out on proposal presentations (new or renewal).
- Making visits to markets (insurance companies). Arrangements have been made, during the internship for the interns to spend a few days at several of these carriers learning the other side of the business.
- Learning to use reference manuals, collecting information, investigating, or gathering leads. Going on line to use-
o Best's Financial Reports
o Best's Engineering Guide
o FC&S Bulletins
o Industrial Guides - Spending time with Account Executives and Technical Services Team on day to day transactions.
- Creating computer exhibits for a proposal: cash flow, graphic representation of losses, costs, etc.
- A Major Account Project: gathering, collating, summarizing, or totaling data for a large account. Involving the intern in the full scope of the project so that they have a feeling for the importance of their activities and how it is a part of the end product.
- Proofing proposals/submissions/policy documents when they come back from word processing or the carriers.
The Gallagher Summer Intern Program Advantage
Spending two summers of your life with a company is a substantial investment. Many features of our intern program have helped establish its solid reputation among students.
The program embraces the concept of learning by doing. As an intern, you’ll be working closely with producers on a daily basis in their work environment. Former interns are quick to point out that these Gallagher professionals are very approachable as they guide students through many workplace scenarios.
Gallagher interns do much more than push paper and act as "go-fers." As an intern, you’ll witness and be part of the business at hand — the sales process. Many interns have noted that the Gallagher internship offers a more in-depth experience than many other types of internships.
