Curator at Worcester Art Museum to Speak at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Dr. Christine Kondoleon, Curator of Greek and Roman Art at the Worcester Art Museum, will deliver a lecture on Thursday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. in Room 519 of the Hogan Campus Center. Kondoleon's lecture, on the Saint Catherine Monastery, is free and open to the public.

Set beneath the mountain where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments, Saint Catherine Monastery, constructed by order of the Emperor Justinian in the sixth century, has been one of the world's most popular centers of religious pilgrimage for over 15 centuries.

Within its walls rest significant religious and historical structures, such as a library of icons and ancient illuminated manuscripts and a sixth-century Church reputed to lie directly on the site of the Burning Bush. The monastery also houses a mosaic of the Transfiguration made by the Greek artists of Constantinople. The monastery is under the auspices of the Greek Orthodox Church and most of the monks are of Greek origin.

This lecture is sponsored by the College's Classics Department and the Hellenic Arts Society of Worcester.
