"Holy Cross students help resolve problems in Worcester's neighborhoods"

Students from the College of the Holy Cross have worked with The Research Bureau to document problems, such as potholes, faded crosswalks, abandoned vehicles and illegal dumping, in Worcester's neighborhoods. Two-thirds of the issues were resolved, according to The Research Bureau.

"Sacrifice equals success....Pentucket's Geoghegan wins prestigious scholarship"

Eileen Geoghegan '07 was accepted as a Sommer Scholar in the prestigious Ph.D. program at Johns Hopkins' School of Public Health, widely hailed as the country's top school of public health. "It's a really nice award," said Geoghegan. "It's not going to be easy. It's a little intimidating. But I think Holy Cross prepared me well. I worked very hard in college. I felt qualified for Johns Hopkins but there were plenty of other qualified people, too." She was on the women's track and field team at Holy Cross.

"Simmons rides NBA carousel; Ex-HC star may get 2nd look from Celts"

Keith Simmons '07, who was named Patriot League Player of the Year, is currently working out for NBA teams. “I try not to worry about what they're looking for,” Simmons said. “I just try to be myself. If I go out there and try to be crazy and do things I'm not good at, it'll make me look bad. I'm just letting them do the evaluating, and I'm going to do the playing. Whatever that lands me, whether it’s Europe or a summer league team, that’s fine. If it’s in the NBA, I will be extremely happy, but I'm just concentrating on being myself, getting better and enjoying the process.”

" 'Food for Fines' drive to benefit local parish"

About 1,000 pounds of non-perishable food will be donated to the Outreach Center of St. Paul’s Cathedral on Chatham Street. The food was collected as part of Holy Cross' annual "Food for Fines" drive, where $1 worth of library fines is waived with a donation of a food or personal care item.

"Malden High's Susan Choy, Wan Yi Fang earn way to college as Gates Millennium scholars"

Wan Yi Fang, a Malden High School graduate, will attend the College of the Holy Cross in the fall. She is among 1,000 high school seniors selected as Gates Millennium Scholars, a program for low-income minority students funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Winners receive grants toward college expenses all the way through graduate school.

Allyson Brown '94, program officer for Concern Worldwide U.S., the Dublin, Ireland-based international humanitarian relief and development organization, has committed to helping people in need. She says part of the desire to help people was instilled by her time at the College of the Holy Cross. "A lot of it comes from my parents. They were both very mindful as we grew up about the need to do something for others every day," she said. "I grew up with two parents who were very committed to and energized by their work. And from Holy Cross where there is a great emphasis on social justice."
