Edward T. O'Donnell, associate professor of history at the College of the Holy Cross, comments on a memorial unveiled a year after the historic 1904 burning of the steamboat General Slocum and the lack of a memorial at the World Trade Center site. "Talk about contrasts! We are — I almost hate to say it — a memorial-obsessed society in a lot of ways," O'Donnell said. "That's good on one level. It shows a historical consciousness." On the less thrilling other hand, "it opens all kinds of debate over what should be done." O'Donnell is the author of a book on the Slocum, titled Ship Ablaze: The Tragedy Of The Steamboat General Slocum.

Joanna Ziegler, professor of visual arts at the College of the Holy Cross, is cited in an article exploring the benefits of secular contemplative practices as a pedagogical method. Ziegler employs a practice called "contemplative seeing" or "beholding", "in which students patiently and systematically study a few works of art for the entire semester. They thereby consciously develop essential capacities for 'seeing' a painting's light, colour, organisation, style and theme at increasingly sophisticated levels."
