Holy Cross Magazine sponsors forum on ‘The Place for Athletics’ in higher education

Holy Cross’ storied tradition in collegiate athletics continues today with an impressive program in both men’s and women’s varsity teams. In addition to fielding 27 varsity sports, the College logs top graduation rates for student-athletes.

Still, in today’s complex world, maintaining a high-caliber athletic program and being true to academic priorities is a challenge — as the cover story in the latest issue of Holy Cross Magazine illustrates.

Editors of the magazine recently gathered seven members of the College community for a discussion on the place for athletics in the world of higher education — and at Holy Cross in particular. Among the topics covered: scholarships, financial aid, the advantages and challenges of being in the Patriot League, alumni opinion, the toll on students balancing rigorous course work and playing a varsity sport, the institutional investment in the athletic program, and what the future might hold for Crusader sports.

Discussion participants were Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J., president of the College; Frank Vellaccio, senior vice president; John Axelson, professor, department of psychology, and NCAA faculty and policy committee representative; Tina Chen, director, academic services and learning resources; Ann McDermott ’79, director of admissions; Dick Regan ’76, director of athletics; and Christine Strawson ’08, Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Veteran sports broadcaster and commentator Clark V. Booth ’61 moderated the discussion.
