Islamic Philosopher to Discuss 21st Century Muslim/Christian Relations at Holy Cross

On Monday, March 17 at 4:00 p.m. in the Rehm Library, world-renown Islamic scholar Seyyed Hossein Nasr will give a lecture titled "Islam and Christianity in the 21st Century." His talk, which is free and open to the public, will focus on the theological, historical and cultural aspects of interfaith dialogue between Islam and Christianity, and its significance for the Abrahamic tradition.

The author of more than twenty-eight books and over 500 articles, Nasr is one of the foremost authorities in Islamic studies. His scholarship spans various aspects of Islamic studies as well as comparative philosophy and religion, philosophy of art, the philosophical and religious dimensions of the environmental crisis, religion and science, and interfaith dialogue. His most recent book, The Heart of Islam, was released last year by HarperCollins.

Nasr has taught at Tehran University, where he was also the dean of the Faculty of Letters, and has served as president of Aryamehr University in Iran. He was the first professor of Islamic studies at the American University of Beirut and founder of the Iranian Academy of Philosophy. In the United States, he has taught at Harvard, Utah, and Temple. He is currently the University Professor of Islamic Studies at George Washington University, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1984.

Nasr earned his Ph.D. in Islamic cosmology and science from Harvard University. He has lectured throughout the United States, Western Europe, India, Australia, Japan, and most of the Muslim world.
