DEAFinitely Swim ProgramEvery semester, students enrolled in the American Sign Language (ASL) program at Holy Cross are exposed to a world beyond their own. In addition to studying Deaf language, history and culture in class, students are given the opportunity to apply that knowledge in the Deaf community - giving them a new perspective on Deaf people and Deaf culture. For the past five years, the College has offered swimming lessons for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children, their siblings, and hearing children of Deaf parents at the Hart Center Pool on Sunday afternoons from 12 - 2 p.m. The lessons are taught by qualified members of the Holy Cross swim team and the American Sign Language (ASL) club. The DEAFinitely Swim program hosts about 25 - 30 children each year - with some families coming from over an hour away to participate. Lessons began in early March and will run until Sunday, April 27. Photos from this year's DEAFinitely Swim Program are shown below. The ASL Club also hosts skating and tutoring programs for Deaf children. |
