Wyclef Jean to perform Spring Weekend concert

On Monday, April 29, Holy Cross will be welcoming Wyclef Jean back to campus. Jean first performed here in 1996 with his former band, The Fugees. Now, in the midst of his solo career, he is touring to promote his upcoming album, Masquerade. The album is a return to his hip-hop roots. According to Jean, "We can't forget to pay homage to what brought us into the game in the first place."

Born the son of a minister in Haiti, Jean and his family moved to the U.S. and settled in Brooklyn, N.Y., to be close to other relatives.

As a teen in Brooklyn, Jean began performing with his cousins in the rap group Tranzlater Crew. It was in this group that he developed and improved upon his musical talents. Tranzlater Crew later evolved into the well-known group, The Fugees. Jean is an accomplished guitarist as well as a talented rapper. After finding success with The Fugees, Jean began his solo career in 1997. Some of Jean's best-known songs include, "We Trying to Stay Alive," "Guantanamera" and "Gone Till November."

The concert doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 for Holy Cross students (limit of 2 tickets per person), $15 for consortium students and $18 for the general public. Tickets are available at all Strawberries locations and the Holy Cross Bookstore.

This concert is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board with help from the Black Student Union, Student Government Association and Student Programs & Leadership Development.
