Holy Cross SCOHAH Marks National Hunger and Homelessness Week

Monday, Nov. 12 - Friday, Nov. 16, 2001

According to recent statistics, 750,000 Americans are homeless each night. Join your fellow Holy Cross students as they raise awareness to the problems of hunger and homelessness during the College's annual week of events, sponsored by the Student Coalition on Hunger and Homelessness (SCOHAH), a 120-member organization run through the Chaplains' Office.

All week long, student volunteers from SCOHAH will be seated at tables in the Hogan Campus Center lobby. They will be helping fellow students to write letters to congressmen about the farm bill, which will expand governmental food aid programs.

In addition, SCOHAH will be having a student clothing drive in the residence halls. There will be a box at the end of each hall to donate clothes which will be brought to a local shelter.

On Monday, Nov. 12, there will be a student vigil in front of Kimball Dining Hall at 5:15 p.m.  Held at dinner time, this vigil will serve to publicly launch Hunger and Homelessness Week at Holy Cross.

On Wednesday, Nov. 14, there will be the annual Homeless Solidarity Sleepout on the Hogan Campus Center lawn. Starting at 10 p.m., students will arrive at the lawn to sleep in only sleeping bags, blankets and cardboard boxes that will be provided by SCOHAH. This event is designed to promote solidarity with those individuals less fortunate than us. Participants will leave the lawn at 8 a.m. the next morning. Dress warmly! Also on Thursday will be the annual Oxfam Hunger Fast, where Holy Cross students will have the opportunity to donate money from their meal plan to benefit the world's hungry through Oxfam's relief efforts.
